Second COVID booster… sign me up!

Opinion: Today the Government will finalise precisely who will be eligible for the second booster of the vaccine.

It had proposed the severely immunocompromised, aged care residents, people 65 plus and Māori and Pacific people 50 and over.

Second COVID booster… sign me up!
We have more than enough vaccine doses in the country. 3.2 million of the things. Take out our most vulnerable and we still have 2.3 million.

Finally recognising that it had got it wrong with the initial vaccine rollout. Māori mortality is so much lower than pākehā mortality. The age of vulnerability for Māori is, therefore, lower than pākehā.

The Government was told this a zillion times during the pandemic and vaccine rollout. And a zillion times it said there was no problem there, that the universal rollout was the best approach.

It eventually admitted it had been making that up and had got it wrong. This second booster rollout goes some way toward showing at least the Government is learning from its mistakes.

But I’d like the Government to go further. Sure, start with our vulnerable for the second booster but after that concerted campaign, come July/August, when the younger general population will be hitting about the six months since their booster - let us at it!

Gimme all of the vaccines, all of the time. I had my flu vaccine this week and feel so much safer for it. I know some of you who have had COVID might be less keen, some of you in general, less keen, but please give us the option.

I feel very lucky not to have had COVID. I’ve still been to the clubs, gigs, on planes and in the office, but have somehow avoided it - and if there’s a chance of keeping up my winning streak with another booster… yes, please.

We have more than enough vaccine doses in the country. 3.2 million of the things. Take out our most vulnerable and we still have 2.3 million.

That also leaves enough for our under-five-year-olds if we follow the United States, which we should.

Say that’s about 300,000 doses - though kids only need a tenth of the dose so nothing really.

By my back-of-the-envelope maths, there are just about enough vaccines left for those of us who want them, plus we’re still importing more.

But on today’s fridge stocks, two million vaccines waiting for willing arms. Yes, Sign me up.
