A few messages have come through to me over the last few weeks claiming that my support of sending lethal weapons to Ukraine, or paying for them via the UK like our government has, is tantamount to murder.
The messages claim that me siding with Ukraine and encouraging Ukraine to defend its territory, and how we must help them do that, is supporting the massacre of innocent civilians.
Other messages claim our NZ$30m contribution, plus fully crewed aircraft, will make us a target of Russia.
I would just like to retort these claims.
Would you rather us sit back, do nothing, and watch as Putin's forces continue the scorched earth warfare?
Shall we just allow Russian soldiers to keep murdering tens of thousands of civilians?
What about raping them? Beating them? Tying them up? Burying them in plastic bags in mass graves?
Or shooting villagers at close range?
Shall we sit back while the Russians loot and steal?
And then annihilate historic cities until they're unrecognisable?
While Putin is lying and spouting propaganda, should we just pretend he isn't?
Should we leave them alone to sort out their own problems?
No. We shouldn't. We shouldn't just sit back and watch these atrocities from afar.
Ukraine has had an aggressor on its doorstep for a decade.
That aggressor has not just barged through the door, but it's now destroying everything inside, in every room, on every floor.
We shouldn't be a Switzerland. We shouldn't stand for sitting on our hands.
We're a principled nation, and we don't sit back when there are wrongs to be righted.
So yes, we should be helping to stop Putin's invasion.
We should stop the massacres, the murders, the mass shootings, the genocide, and the war crimes.
He's unhinged. He's a tyrant. And he goes against everything we stand for as Kiwis.
So yes, if lethal weapons help Ukraine to stop Putin's terror, we should absolutely be paying for them.
Because the longer this goes on, the more innocent people will die. And we cannot be responsible for that.
