Rachel Smalley

Rachel Smalley has spent more than two decades working across all media platforms – digital, television, radio and print. The majority of her career has been in broadcasting, working as a Foreign Correspondent, Senior Anchor and Producer for a number of international and domestic news channels.

Rachel was based in Europe for several years reporting on many globally significant events including political elections in France and Britain, and was in Washington D.C in 2008 reporting on Barack Obama’s historic election to the White House. Her career has taken her to Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe and North America, including assignments in Afghanistan, Iraq, Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon, South Sudan, Niger and South Africa.

Rachel was a senior member of TV3’s news and current affairs team for many years reporting on the London Bombings, the disappearance of Madeline McCann, the Christchurch Earthquakes and the Pike River tragedy.

As well as hosting First Light on Today FM, Rachel also works as a communications and storytelling consultant to the corporate and not-for-profit sectors.

She has two great loves in life; her son Finn and her partner Dave. Her free time is spent beating back three hectares of garden, going for the occasional run, skiing, standing on the side-line of Saturday soccer, or hanging out with her treasured group of friends.

She’s not a fan of peas or pessimists, and she has two major weaknesses; Mitre10 and custard squares. She can’t walk past either.
